mum) and the temperature coefficient of d-c output voltage is 1 mv per degree Celsius. A negative capacitance circuit is provided which improves the overall frequency response of the amplifier but unavoidably adds noise to the input signal if large stray capacitances are compensated. Signals of 40 pv through 7 Mohm (microelectrode in saline) can be faithfully reproduced. The amplifier has been tested in physiological experiments in which microelectrodes (0.5 to 3 IL) were used to record resting and action potentials (extracellular) from neurons in frog spinal cord, chicken cerebellum, isolated monkey brain (2), and nerve fibers in vitro. The IGFET amplifier gave consistently better overall results than a variety of commercial electrometer amplifiers (vacuum tube and transistor types) that were used to make the same measurements. Many other applications for this device and simple associated circuits have already been found. I believe the unusual features of this amplifier make it suitable for routine use in many types of research; it seems to answer the needs of large laboratory instruction classes where 10 to 20 amplifiers are needed and the cost of commercial devices is prohibitive. Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملGalactic Halo Stellar Structures in the Triangulum-andromeda Region∗
This letter reports on the Galactic stellar structures that appear in the foreground of our CanadaFrance-Hawaii-Telecopse/MegaCam survey of the halo of the Andromeda galaxy. We recover the main sequence and main sequence turn-off of the Triangulum-Andromeda structure recently found by Majewski and collaborators at a heliocentric distance of ∼ 20 kpc. The survey also reveals another less populat...
متن کاملPandas’ Cubs: Discovery of Two New Dwarf Galaxies in the Surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum Galaxies
We present the discovery of two new dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XXI and Andromeda XXII, located in the surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies (M31 and M33). These discoveries stem from the first year data of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS), a photometric survey of the M31/M33 group conducted with the Megaprime/MegaCam wide-field camera mounted on the Canada-France-...
متن کاملA Keck/DEIMOS Kinematic Study of Andromeda IX: dark matter on the smallest galactic scales
We present the results of a kinematic survey of the dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31, Andromeda IX, which appears to be the lowest surface brightness and also the faintest galaxy (MV = −8.3) found to date. Using Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic data, we have measured its velocity relative to M31, its velocity dispersion, and its metallicity. It exhibits a significant velocity dispersion σv = 6.8 +3.0...
متن کاملA trio of new Local Group galaxies with extreme properties
We report on the discovery of three new dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. These galaxies are found in new CFHT/MegaPrime g, i imaging of the southwestern quadrant of M31, extending our extant survey area to include the majority of the southern hemisphere of M31’s halo out to 150 kpc. All these galaxies have stellar populations which appear typical of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) systems. The first ...
